City College Launches 'JAM Fest'

24 May 2007

While the dust settles on the Brighton Festival which has brought a wealth of international talent to the City, the focus is very much on budding local talent as City College launches its inaugural June Arts and Media Festival - the JAM Fest!

In past summers, at the end of the academic year, students from a range of creative disciplines - drama, art, music, multimedia - have showcased their work in a variety of events and exhibitions. For the first time, the College is gathering the wealth of talent coming out of the Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) department under one 'Festival' umbrella. The aim of the JAM Fest is to raise awareness of the exciting diversity of creative ideas coming out of the College.

VPA Director Steve Lewis says:

'For me, the unique selling point of the JAM Fest is that it gives a real flavour of Brighton's freshest, up-and-coming grassroots talent. Brighton's reputation as a hotbed of creativity is increasing both nationally and internationally and when it comes to this trend, Visual & Performing Arts students at City College represent the new generation. We're hoping that more local people will get a chance to check out some of the events and get a taste of this city's exciting cultural future.'

Highlights of the JAM Fest include:

? Mousetrap - 'Who are the captured? Those looking in or those looking out? Be captivated?' An evening of sound, vision, vj-ing, video, animation and interactivity at the Sanctuary Cafe, presented by 1st Year Foundation Degree Multimedia students.

? Brighton Records Showcase - This gig at the Komedia is to showcase new music from the third commercial CD compilation release from Brighton Records, a label set up by the Music Technology & Multimedia students of City College in an effort to showcase fresh, new talent in these creative areas.

? Multimedia Graduate Show - Students from the B.A. (Hons) Multimedia and Foundation Degree Multimedia courses celebrate the end of their programme of study with a display at the Lighthouse of cutting edge work utilising digital video, animation, soundscapes, interactive media, games and installations. The show is supported by Lighthouse Arts and Training and showcases some of the freshest multimedia talent to hit the Brighton streets this summer.

? 'Bouncers' by John Godber - Performing Arts Students will be presenting live theatre at the Drama Studio at Wilson Avenue. Bursting with imagination and wit, Bouncers is an outrageous and hilarious parody of the disco scene. The four brutish bouncers of the title portray an array of characters - giggly guys and girls, disco-goers, Hooray Henrys, pogoing punks and drunken slobs - as we are invited for a night out on the town. The evening's events at are set against the glitzy glamour of the nightclub scene.

? Art & Design, Photography & Games Development - End of Year Show - The final projects from over 250 students who complete their courses this year will be exhibited over the three days York and Trafalgar Buildings, Pelham Street. It will be a feast for the senses and an infinite variety of different art works including photography, games design, fine art, fashion, textiles, graphics, illustration and 3-D design will be presented.
