City College Presents New Twist on Grimm's Tales

4 April 2005

Performing Arts Students from City College Brighton and Hove are presenting a dynamic whirlwind of physical theatre based on five of the Grimm's tales at the Tower Theatre, Pelham Tower, Brighton, on the 5th and 6th of May at 7:30pm. This lively production features a new twist on The Lady and The Lion, Snow White, The Hare and The Hedgehog, The Brothers Scamp and The Musicians of Braeman. It's a very theatrical, ensemble-oriented piece emphasising the vigorous spirit of the tales as they were originally told. Many people are familiar with the 'popular' versions of Grimm's folk tales, from the charm of Rapunzel to the innocence of Hansel and Gretel. The original stories, however, dug deeply into childhood fears of torture, imprisonment, kidnapping, abuse and things even darker.

This adaptation, directed by Siou Hannam, was originally created by The Young Vic Company through a process of improvisation and study about the stories. The Young Vic's Artistic Director Tim Supple brought in Carol Anne Duffy, an award-winning British poet to put their work onto the page. The production was a great success and won critical acclaim in London before going to New York.
