City College Principal praises award-winning local teacher

13 October 2010

City College Brighton and Hove Principal Phil Frier has spoken of his admiration for local teacher Paul Harrington, winner of the Teacher of the Year Award sponsored by City College in the recent Argus Achievement Awards 2010. Mr. Frier was also one of the judges of the awards. During the award ceremony, held at the Theatre Royal Brighton, an audience of more than 700 guests were introduced to the unsung heroes of Sussex in award categories looking for the finest of our emergency services, schools, businesses and residents. Paul, a teacher at Carden Primary School, won the award for the support he gave his pupil Carlos Almonacid who was diagnosed with leukaemia aged only nine.
Paul Harrington says:

'I felt quite astonished to have been nominated in the first place. I love my job and don't feel that what I do is more than anyone else at Carden School. However, it was lovely to accept the award on behalf of all the staff who work so hard for the children and their families. I'd also like to thank the children themselves as they are the ones who really make Carden what it is.'

Phil Frier adds:

'Paul is an absolute credit to the local education sector and the College was delighted to sponsor this award. The support Paul gave Carlos and his commitment to teaching in general exemplifies the type of standards that those of us involved in education always aim to achieve and the awards generally are a fantastic way of reminding us of the selfless work going on in our community. City College has its own Achiever Awards on the 21st October which I hope will remind local people, as Paul's award has, of how education transforms lives.'
