City College Seeks Governors

Local people are being offered the opportunity to join the Corporation (Governing Body) of City College Brighton and Hove. City College is a successful general Further Education College with a rich mix of students from many different walks of life, from all over the world and of all ages. The College is extremely welcoming and students and visitors consistently comment on the friendly attitudes and support from staff. This friendly atmosphere is an essential element of the College's ethos.
This is an exciting time for Further Education with developments both locally and nationally. City College has been looking at radical plans to renew its estate. It is already taking the lead on vocational, co-operative, business, and international initiatives. The College is also an important provider of foundation degrees.
Harry Brown, a City College Governor since September 2007
The College would like to hear from individuals who are able to volunteer their time and expertise to join a dynamic and forward thinking Corporation whose members bring a wide range of experience to take the further development of the College forward.
Harry Brown, a former chief executive in the insurance industry who joined the Corporation in September 2007, says
'Personally, I have found the College to be a very friendly place, from the Principal to the staff and to the newest student. It has a great atmosphere and 'buzz' with the enthusiasm to succeed and produce outstanding results. The existing Governors come from a wide variety of backgrounds. This diversity and knowledge and having the common aim of improving upon our success makes being a Governor a simulating and rewarding experience.'
'On average, being a Governor involves two short meetings in the early evening each month plus a small amount of background reading. As a Governor you influence the College's strategic direction and the reward is to see the success of learners and the immense amount of talent from people of all ages, knowing that in some small way you have contributed to their achievements.'
City College is committed to the principles of equality and diversity and welcomes applications from all sections of the community.
Areas of expertise and interest which would be particularly valuable at this time would be construction, project management, finance and audit, the hospitality sector, and apprenticeships. Members are offered appropriate induction training and courses widening their knowledge of both further education and governance. A typical time commitment for a new member would be 6 - 8 hours per term, mainly in the early evening.
