In a new collaborative project between City College Brighton and Hove and Brighton & Hove Museums, students have had the unique opportunity to develop designs for elements of museum galleries. The winning design was recently installed in Brighton Museum's 20th Century Art & Design gallery.
Students on City College's Multimedia Foundation degree course were given the chance to respond to a commission for a new interactive element at Brighton Museum. They were given training in Macromedia Flash and asked to produce an interactive unit which would engage and inform museum visitors. All the proposals were judged by professional museum staff and the winning design, by Chris Kelly, was considered so good it is being introduced for visitors to use.

Chris's design offers a quick introduction to the Art & Design gallery. He has included sections on the different art movements represented in the gallery itself as well as highlighting some key objects for visitors to learn about. A special section for younger children gives them the chance to choose a favourite object from the gallery displays and experiment on screen with the way it looks - encouraging them to look at the original object in new ways. Chris says:
'It was really interesting to have a live project where you've got the potential to have the thing you've made used in the real world. Before I did this, I thought museums were generally just stuff in boxes but I've actually learnt a few things about the items and they're really interesting.'
One of the judges was Alex Hawkey, designer for Brighton & Hove Museums Service. He commented:
'Chris's design suited the gallery space, explained the sections very well. It's easy to use and well thought-out. The project with City College worked really well; we were impressed with how much the students had achieved in such a short time. In six weeks they'd all learnt the programme, met the challenges and come up with diverse ideas.'
Chris Kelly's interactive unit can be used in the main ground floor gallery at Brighton Museum. Admission is free.
