Krystal Jones, who has recently completed a beginner's course in Mosaic at City College's Adult & Community Learning department at the Connaught Centre in Hove, may be a novice but this hasn't stopped her winning a national competition sponsored by tile specialist, Topps Tiles. Krystal says:
'Winning the award was a lovely surprise. My tutor Federika was fantastic and I've found the Connaught Centre a very diverse and supportive environment in which to learn.'

The Topps Tiles Award for Achievement in Mosaic celebrates the work of beginners studying mosaic at adult education centres and mosaic workshops throughout Britain. Prizes were presented by Glenn Claridge, manager of Topps Tiles' in Brighton. Krystal received a special certificate and a cheque for £100. Her tutor, Federika Glavich, also received a £150 store voucher to purchase course work material. The competition judge was David Tuhill M.A., who has taught at the Royal College of Art. Mr. Tuhill says:
'Krystal has made a beautiful piece. The white tiles used for the background made the whole piece stand out, clearly defining the lizard. The two shades of green also gave life and form to the creature. It's a marvellous piece of work and Krystal and her tutor Federika Glavich are to be congratulated."
Krystal's tutor Federika Glavich, who has been teaching at City College Brighton and Hove for 19 years, says:
'It was wonderful to find out that one of my students had won this award. I felt so proud of Krystal and it is great for us to have this recognition.'
