City College Student receives Computer Arts Excellence Award

21 July 2006

A multimedia student from City College Brighton and Hove has received an Excellence Award from Computer Arts, the world's best-selling magazine for digital artists and designers. 28 year-old Alexandra Krystova came to the UK from the Czech Republic with the intention of learning English. However, whilst working in Brighton, Alexandra met some City College students and decided to attend the college and get a taste of English education. She started by studying web design, which, in turn led her onto the HND multimedia course and she has now completed her second and final year at the College. For the Computer Arts 'Graduate Showcase' competition, Alexandra was given the challenging brief to design a website for the Parlophone music festival.

Completed in collaboration with fellow students Phil Cobley and Kit Man, Alexandra's website is a 4D record of the festival event focusing on the communication and promotion of Parlophone artists before, during and after the festival. The site, created using After Effects, Photoshop, InDesign and Premiere, allows visitors to choose their ID and send messages, pictures and videos, which all visitors can see in realtime on the large screen. The award has led to Alexandra being head-hunted by top London web design company Thin Martian and she will also be studying Multimedia at London College of Communication.

Alexandra says:

'Before coming to City College, I didn't have any idea I could do this sort of work so it really helped me develop creatively. I was encouraged and supported to explore my own way of doing things and the tutors were always very positive. I'd had a different experience of learning in the Czech Republic which was stressful and much more critical and negative.'

Roddy Llewellyn, senior art editor of Computer Arts says:

"Of all the web and interactive media projects submitted to this year's Graduate Showcase, Alexandra's Parlophone Festival project was the most completed, original and comprehensive. She demonstrated a good understanding of brand identity and client needs, providing all the content the viewer would expect from a site like this. She provided this information in various formats, showing a professional understanding of the technology available on the web. Alexandra's piece was the most accomplished and, most importantly, realistic site in the category, and thus deserved the Excellence Award."
