City College Student wins 'Safe Drive, Stay Alive' i-Pod

9 February 2007

City College Brighton and Hove Public Services student Kyle McClelland has been announced as the lucky winner of a mini i-Pod ? presented to him by Tony Gurr, the Station Manager at Preston Circus Fire Station in Brighton - after submitting feedback for 'Safe Drive, Stay Alive', a hard-hitting road safety event held recently at the College. Kyle (18) has set his sights on being a fireman and is currently awaiting the results of his entry exam.

'Safe Drive, Stay Alive' is aimed at raising awareness of the risks and dangers associated with driving among a vulnerable group of young people. The show is based around a video reconstruction of a road traffic collision. It traces the events leading up to the incident and then follows the actions of the emergency services dealing with the crash.

Members of the Police, Ambulance Service, Fire Service and an A & E Consultant speak of their own experiences at the scene of the collision. Conveyed by video, perhaps the most poignant messages come from the parent of a young person who lost their life in a road crash and also from a person who has disabilities as a result of a road incident. In 2004, 44 people lost their lives in East Sussex alone as a result of road traffic collisions. The show, organised by the Fire Service, is aimed at making young drivers aware of their responsibilities and of the potentially devastating effects that bad driving can have, not just on them, but others.

Kyle McClelland says:

'I learnt a lot from the presentation and it was interesting to hear members of the Emergency Services talking about the incidents they have to deal with. I was really chuffed to win the i-Pod - now I'm just hoping that the next good news I hear is that I'm getting an interview with the Fire Service.'

Tony Gurr says:

'The campaign has been a really effective way of making young people aware of the impact of dangerous driving and the i-Pod competition is a nice way of rewarding them for giving us valuable feedback on the event. It seems fitting that a young person who is so keen to join the Fire Service ended up being the winner.'
