City College Students Back National Fair Funding Campaign

14 February 2005

Students at City College Brighton and Hove are calling on the Government to close the 'grossly unjust' funding gap between school sixth form and local sixth form/general further education colleges, backed by education leaders, MPs, unions, lecturers and the NUS.

Colleges receive at least 10% less per student than schools for providing the same courses. The average college would gain £500,000 per year if the funding gap were closed. Two thirds of 16 to 19-year-olds study in college. Ann Smith, Principal of City College says:

'We are delighted that our students are working with this campaign to help the college. Students and staff here want all political parties to give a manifesto pledge that they will close the funding gap. The college already does a fantastic job for its students - 96% of applicants to Higher Education have gained places on their chosen specialist course at top Universities and Art Colleges. This money would make a real difference to the current and future students at City College. Improved funding would lead to even better performance and quality. Closing the funding gap would mean even better facilities, better provision for staff and superior learning support.'

Thomas Coull, Year 1 Performing Arts Student says:

'It's really unfair that all students don't benefit from equal funding. I enjoy it at College and actually want to come here to study. I think I've learnt a lot more since I've been here than I did at school.'

Dr John Brennan, Association of Colleges Chief Executive says:

'It is indefensible that the two-thirds of young learners who study in colleges, many of whom come from disadvantaged backgrounds, are being short-changed by the Government. It's time for the Government to honour its promise to close the gap.'
