City College Students Create Festival Gargoyles

3 June 2006

Striking gargoyles created by sculpture students from City College Brighton and Hove are being displayed at 'Passed to the Future', a special exhibition for Adur Festival in St. Mary De Haura, a fascinating Norman church in East Street, Shoreham-by-Sea. The festival runs from Saturday June 3rd to Saturday June 17th.

The theme of the exhibition is the community's hopes for what will be passed on to future generations, particularly in the light of recent plans to regenerate Shoreham. The title is so broad that artists have had a free reign to interpret the theme in their own personal way, either literally or abstractly.

Sculptor tutor Teresa Martin says:

'We chose the challenge of making gargoyles to celebrate the restoration of St. Mary De Haura as it gave students a chance to utilise the skills they've learnt this year. It's good for students to create work for public viewing, especially for places where they are not necessarily expecting to see art works. The variety of feedback is always enlightening. The process they learnt enabled them to work in clay first which suits beginners as well the more experienced students developing new modelling skills.'

Students took on board the history of gargoyles warding off evil spirits and added their own agendas for creating them. Creative inspiration came from such diverse subjects as hated politicians, pet cats, jingoistic football fans and the figurehead from a local pub!

The sculptures, which will be available for purchase, have been cast in weather-resistant Caen stone coloured concrete to blend with the church. A percentage of the sales from the sculptures will go towards the church restoration fund.
