City College Students Launch New Record Label

28 April 2005

In a bold move to showcase the exciting, eclectic variety of young talent at City College Brighton and Hove, Music Technology and Multimedia Students have taken up the challenge of starting their own record label, 'Brighton Records'. The label is being launched at a showcase gig at The Komedia, Brighton on Wednesday 18th May. The gig has been arranged in conjunction with Brighton Fringe Festival.

Music Technology Tutor Jason Murphy says:

'The purpose of the record label is to give the students a stepping stone into the real world of the music industry instead of just being an academic exercise. It enables them to experience what it's really like to run a record label and have a commercial release of their own so it's quite a unique opportunity.'

Student Jack Deek says:

'I usually don't have the benefit of other musicians telling me what they think of my music and what could be done to make it better. On a creative level it's brilliant - having loads of other people working together to achieve the same goal of making a great compilation. It's also amazing to have the public listen to our work and to get feedback. If we didn't have the support of the College to set up the label, it would be a lot harder to do it ourselves.'

All creative and commercial ideas for Brighton Records are devised and developed by the students. Brighton Records' debut release is setting the scene for the future with a compilation CD and showcase gig planned for May of each year. The rich range of genres covered by Brighton Records includes Urban, Rock/Alternative, Electronic/Leftfield, Dance and Singer/Songwriter.

Entry to the Brighton Records Label Launch is £5. This price includes a copy of the compilation CD which will otherwise be £5 in the shops. The CD will be available in all good local record shops from the 16th May. Tickets are available from The Komedia, The Dome or City College Brighton and Hove. The gig is from 8pm until 1am and will feature live bands, DJs & VJs. Drinks promos on the night.
