City College Students Star on New ITV Channel

1 March 2006

Short films by students from City College Brighton and Hove are reaching an international audience on a new ITV broadband television channel www.itvlocal.tv, established by ITV Meridian. The work has been produced by HND Multimedia students under the supervision of course co-ordinator, James Brocklehurst.

Mark Greco, Manager of the College's CoVE (Centre of Vocational Excellence) in Digital Design says:

"It's extremely exciting that the College can work with Meridian Broadcasting on such an innovative project. ITV Local not only gives the students an opportunity to see their work showcased within the locality but provides them with a platform on both a national and international scale. It's also a great way for employers to see some of the fantastic work being produced by our staff and students.'

Featured student Kit Man says:

'The HND Multimedia course has given me an avenue to explore my interest in animation and I'm grateful for the opportunity to showcase my work to a wider audience on the ITV Local channel. It's fantastic to be part of such a multicultural and creative community here in Brighton, as well as being able to support and work with home grown talent. I hope other artists are encouraged to get out there and do the same after seeing my animation.'

The ITV Local service provides local news and weather through the ITV Meridian team, but everything else is provided by people in the community - music, films, documentaries and adverts. It is the first time in 50 years that an ITV region has provided news and feature programming 24 hours a day to the entire region. Viewers can catch up with their own region wherever they are in the world thanks to the internet and broadband technology.

The service is being run and developed in Brighton and Hastings by Channels Manager Peter Robinson. A Brighton resident, Peter has been working for ITV for 12 years, and before joining the ITV Local team was an onscreen news reporter. Peter says:

"I am absolutely blown away by the truly amazing quality of the video production work by the City College students. The films create a true reflection of Brighton's funky and creative vibe. This is what ITV Local is all about - giving new Brighton talent the chance to show their work to a wider audience."
