Food Service and Food Preparation students from City College Brighton and Hove recently helped cook and serve food for members of the House of Lords and their guests at the State Opening of Parliament.
Chef/Lecturer Andy McGlennon had met the House of Lords' Head Chef Michael Stevenson at a 'Skills for Chefs' Conference in Sheffield during the summer and Mr. Stevenson agreed to take the students on a work-experience basis, spending two days helping to cook and serve food on this illustrious occasion.

Rather than just use the students for menial jobs, the House of Lords chefs took them under their wing and involved them in important tasks such as cooking lobsters, making terrines with salmon and sole and decorating dishes with aspic.
'The students got a great deal out of the event' says Andy McGlennon. 'They were in awe of the occasion. When they work outside there are different pressures on them. They not only got an idea of what it's like to work in a bigger kitchen but also got an idea of actually working in that kind of prestigious environment. They showed not only their skills but their willingness to work and their professionalism.'
The House of Lords Head Chef Michael Stevenson says:
"State Opening of Parliament is one of the busiest catering operations in the House of Lords. As well as enthusiastically helping to prepare and serve food for nearly 400 people, the students will have gained valuable work experience on a unique occasion."
