City College Welcomes Falmer Announcement

24 July 2007

City College has warmly welcomed the news that planning permission has been received for the Falmer Community Stadium. To further strengthen the successful relationship between the College and Brighton and Hove Albion, the College intends to enhance the investment in teaching and learning opportunities that the Stadium will create. This is in addition to the successful study support centre at Withdean that currently achieves excellent results and which will also be moved to the Stadium.

The College is seeking funding through the Learning and Skills Council to open up new opportunities for students to experience teaching and learning within the stadium. The course delivery will be targeted at the opportunities created by the stadium such as catering, hospitality, media and journalism creating a unique work and learning opportunity for over 550 young people a year across the city.

Deputy Principal John Evans says:

'The East Stand of the Falmer Stadium will provide a unique learning environment which will be very appealing to all students. It's ideally located close to the universities and Falmer High School and we can build on the success of the Albion in the Community and City College Study Support programme. This is an excellent opportunity for student engagement in an environment outside of normal College premises with superb potential for work experience placements. The stadium also creates an ideal opportunity for the College to advance its City Business Skills provision with local businesses investing in the skills base of the local economy.'

City College Brighton and Hove is currently working with its main funding body, The Learning and Skills Council to develop its case to redevelop its two key sites at Pelham Street and Wilson Avenue to create a 21st Century College.
