City College announces Brighton Pier training partnership

10 November 2008

City College Brighton and Hove has announced the launch of a new partnership with Brighton Pier. The announcement coincides with the inaugural 'Colleges Week' taking place from 10th to 16th November to celebrate the role that colleges play across the country in unlocking talent in communities and transforming the lives of students. As the main local provider of vocational training, City College will be providing training and assessment for Apprenticeships and Train to Gain programmes. City College's City Business Skills department and Brighton Pier HR Manager Jason Mannix have been working together to produce a delivery model where training and assessment will take place on the Pier to enable staff to gain nationally-recognised qualifications. A range of courses will be available to staff, including a newly-developed Mechanical Ride Operations qualification which is aimed directly at staff operating the many rides on the pier. Other qualifications include Food Service, Drink Service, Multi-Skilled, Cleaning, Customer Service, Business Administration, Team Leading and Maintenance Operations. Each member of staff will have a dedicated City College work-based assessor who will create an individual learning plan outlining all aspects of the training that will be delivered.

'Brighton Pier is delighted to be working with City College to provide NVQs and apprenticeships for our employees. We believe that every employee, no matter what the grade, should be given the chance to develop their skills and abilities and we feel it is our responsibility to open up these opportunities. Thanks to the support we have received from City College, this is now possible.'

City College's Tourism Futures co-ordinator Naomi Nunan says:

'This is a really exciting opportunity for City College to work with Brighton Pier to deliver training on-site and enable staff to gain nationally recognised qualifications and develop new skills while they're working. We think its very fitting that we're launching the partnership during Colleges Week because engaging with employers is a growing priority for the Further Education sector in the 21st century. We also feel that for us to have established a strong working partnership with such a high-profile local organisation is a reminder to other employers that City College means business! '
