City College Brighton and Hove's drive to find employers who are willing to take on apprentices in a range of professions is reaping rewards, with local hairdressers Peewees now having seven City College students training at their premises in Kensington Gardens. Penny Manns, Head of Training at Peewees, says:
'City College's Skills Adviser Jean Travis has been really helpful in helping to place apprentices with us and they're all doing brilliantly. We find that if we train our own people, they grow up within our environment, get much more experience within the salon and know what standards we expect. Once they're qualified, they'll grow much quicker into successful stylists. '

Jean Travis says:
'The relationship that we've established with Peewees exemplifies how well apprenticeships can work for both students and employers. We're hopeful that more and more local employers will considering taking on apprentices, not just because of the positive impact it'll have on their business, but more broadly speaking, because it also helps tackle the skills shortages that exist locally and nationally.'
The areas in which City College is seeking employers to take on apprentices include construction (trowel, carpentry & joinery, electrical and plumbing), motor vehicle, business administration, retail, customer care, management, hospitality, early years, health and social care and hairdressing. City College Principal Phil Frier says:
'Despite the gloomy economic climate, it's vital that businesses think beyond the downturn of the present and continue to review their skills base for the upturn of the future. There's never been a better time to access funding to support apprenticeships, and here at City College we're committed to ensuring that employers, employees and young people just starting their careers are fully aware of the options and funding available to them.'
