City College boxer reaches Junior ABA finals

11 May 2011

Archie Hutchins, one of the most promising young boxers in City College Brighton and Hove's Boxing Academy, has reached the Junior ABA finals. His opponent, Kane Jones of Penhill ABC, was short and stocky with a reputation for banging. With this in mind, Archie kept the opening moments of the bout nice and long behind his jab. As he found his range, he started letting both hands go, catching Jones with eye catching one-twos. Archie then stepped up the pace, letting a crushing left hook fly which buckled his opponent's knees. The right hand followed and the bout was stopped.

'I knew exactly how to box this lad and the game plan worked perfectly. He walked on to the shots which allowed me to bang in my left hook', says Archie. 'My aim this year was to win the Junior ABA's and now I'm in the final, I know I can achieve this. My opponent, Newell is from Manchester way. He's an experienced, tall boxer but I know I can win. Being at City College's Boxing Academy has really helped me to reach this level and I'd really encourage other young boxers to look at the opportunities available to them here.'

'Archie has been extremely focussed', says City College's Head Boxing Coach, Adam Haniver. 'He has an unwavering air of confidence and he always believes he can win. He has worked hard at College with a focus on his agility to ensure he can punch from angles and be elusive. The power has always been there, we have just made sure that power is mobile! The tactics from his coaches at Tadley ABC during every bout to date have been perfect and Archie has been able to train specifically in order to apply his game plan. A contingent from the college will be going up to cheer him on in the finals....we can't wait!'

The Junior ABA national finals are taking place on Saturday 21st & 22nd May 2011 at Passion Nightclub, Medway Valley Leisure Park, Chariot Way, Rochester, Kent.
