City College boxer wins Junior ABA title

23 May 2011

City College Brighton and Hove is celebrating after of one of its sporting apprentices, Archie Hutchins, was crowned ABAE Junior Champion. Archie, who trains at Tadley Amateur Boxing Club, has been an Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE) student at the college since the scheme began last year.

On Sunday 22 May, Archie's hard work paid off when he beat John Newell of Shannon ABC by 27 points to 20 in the 2011 Junior ABAE Championships finals in Kent. Archie's coach Adam Haniver said:

'Archie won the Junior ABA finals because we've been able to work alongside his coaches at Tadley ABC, and he's proving himself to be the best boxer in his age group in Britain. To say I'm thrilled is an understatement. The achievement itself is superb, but it's been how he'd got there that ultimately has been so satisfying.'

'He started the season overweight and quite ponderous. We've worked together to develop his weaknesses and harness his strengths. It's been the calculated application of sport science that's paid off. This apprentice is advancing excellently in sport. We're now looking forward to the GB Youth 3 Nations in June up in Scotland, and we're sure Archie can bring back another trophy.'

City College is currently recruiting for Boxing and a range of Sports courses starting in September 2011, for more details see www.ccb.ac.uk/sport or call course information on 01273 667759.
