City College boxer wins Southern Counties title

30 March 2011

Archie Hutchins, one of the most promising young boxers in City College Brighton and Hove's Boxing Academy, has been crowned the Southern Counties Junior ABA Middleweight Champion in a contest held in Chatham, Kent. Archie (17) had extremely tough semi final against Max Wickes of Moulsecoomb ABC before winning a majority decision. After this tough bout, Archie had just two hours to collect himself and rest for the final against Connor James of Hove ABC. In the final, he had to weather an early storm but in the second round, Archie unleashed his now legendary left hook to stop his opponent, who was then unable to continue.

'Archie's dedication to his craft as a boxer has been truly outstanding', says Adam Haniver, City College's Boxing Coach. 'He began the course carrying perhaps too much weight than he should with his fitness levels not up to par but from then on he worked like a demon to bring his weight down to his optimal 75kg limit and focussed upon many aspects of his technique. He's a great ambassador for everything we're trying to achieve in the Academy.'

For his next major bout, Archie will be competing in the ABA National Quarter Finals against the Home Counties champion on Sunday 17th April.
