City College brings in 'Heavy Artillery' for student awards

25 September 2009

For their City Achievers 2009 student awards ceremony, City College Brighton and Hove has enlisted the services of Alex Young, founding member of the world-famous Heavy Artillery graffiti art crew whose stunning murals have become a celebrated part of Brighton's urban landscape. Alex has painted four large-scale panels that will provide a backdrop to the event on Thursday 1st October.

Phil Frier, Principal of City College Brighton and Hove, says:

'City Achievers 2009 is primarily about celebrating the outstanding achievement of students and staff at the College but we also want the event to be distinctively Brightonian in flavour. Alex's art work is renowned in Brighton and beyond and we're delighted that we've been able to draw on his talents to create some striking visuals for us on the night.'

Performing Arts student Ramina Sheno, originally from Chicago and a big fan of the graffiti art scene in her native city, helped Alex on the day.

Ramina (19) says:

'Back in Chicago, I've sketched some outlines for graffiti artists and have done bubble-writing but I've never actually worked on something on this scale before and it was really cool to be part of it. Alex's art is amazing.'
