City College builds links with leading Games corporation

5 April 2011

As part of the Games Design Department's ongoing commitment to developing industry links, City College Brighton and Hove recently welcomed Quality Assurance Specialist Sam Watts and the team from Gamania Digital Entertainment Europe, a leading PC online game and digital entertainment corporation, to run a Focus Group for their currently in development online gaming title, Lucent Heart. This involved first and second year Level 3 Games Design students working in teams to test and constructively comment on every aspect of the game.

After an introductory talk explaining the testing process and the value of effective reporting, the students were allocated roles as observers or testers. Working on a schedule of timed game play all of the students were able to engage in both roles, complete marketing and reporting documents, and discuss their findings in groups for reporting back to the Gamania team at the end of the session.

'Gamania is keen to establish links with local colleges and communities in order to widen the knowledge and understanding of the games industry, which is well supported in the Brighton & Hove area, albeit in closed circles' said Sam Watts. 'Having worked with City College before, I was keen to involve the Games Design students once more to apply their learned skills in the development process. Focus Groups are an ideal opportunity for me as a publisher, to get to the heart of the intended audience of the games, gaining invaluable feedback and understanding of how on target we are with a title in development. I also feel its very important for games companies to reach out to colleges that offer games design courses and assist with the students learning, since these will be the very people the industry could be looking to hire in the future.'

'The students benefited immensely from the hands on session and proved themselves well equipped for the task with their keen attention to detail and thorough approach to reporting', added Course Leader Paul Grant. 'They were able to provide useful insight and feedback, highlighting areas that the Gamania team hadn't thought of and confirming others that they had.'
