City College catering team builds cross-channel links

26 November 2009

Tutors and catering students from City College Brighton and Hove and Lycée Hôtelier Georges Baptiste in Canteleu, Rouen have been taking part in an educational exchange on both sides of the channel, working together to produce a gala dinner at City College’s training restaurant, The Gallery. While in Brighton, the French students experienced a variety of typical local dining including afternoon tea at the Radisson Blu Hotel, fish and chips on the pier and a typical ploughman’s lunch at the Cock Inn, Ringmer. They also visited Plumpton College to gain an insight into Wine Production and Vineyards, Equine Studies and Gamekeeping. The project is subsidised by EU Interreg IVA funding, with the programme organised by lead partner Hove Park School.

"The cultural exchange programme backed by the Interreg project is a fantastic way for students of different backgrounds and nationalities to learn together in each other’s environments."

Fred Lachaise, English tutor at Lycée Hôtelier Georges Baptiste, says:

"This was a great opportunity for the French students to experience English culture. Both English and French communicate in a more natural way now. But above all, what we find interesting is that we had to adapt to another environment when working in the kitchen. It helped us learn new skills and we were able to show the English students some of our savoir faire in pastry and bakery. The French students loved it all the more as it was their first visit to England for most of them."
