City College forges links with Gordon Ramsay's empire

1 June 2011

A team from City College Brighton and Hove was recently invited to London to meet with representatives from Gordon Ramsay Holdings to explore opportunities and raise aspirations for the College's talented young catering students.

The team met the company's Resourcing Manager (Head of HR), John Khan, and were given tours of the Savoy's kitchens, private dining area and restaurant by Head Chef Andy Cook. The team enjoyed lunch at the Maze Grill on Grosvenor Square where a special menu had been prepared for the students. They were also able to see the food being prepared and cooked when they were invited by The Maze Grill Head Chef Matt Bishop into the kitchen area during lunch preparation. Next, the team had a full tour of the Michelin Star Maze Restaurant private dining area and kitchens and were able to speak with the chefs and front-of-house staff. Each student received a signed photo of Gordon Ramsay at the end of their visit.

'The way in which all the staff we met engaged with the students and took time to answer all their questions during a busy working day was fantastic', says City College's Careers & Professional Skills Officer, Elizabeth Pizzey. 'The day went so well and the students made such a favourable impression that all eleven of them have now been offered work experience at a restaurant of their choice and John Khan has made it clear that beyond the work experience, the company is interested in exploring the possibility of employing our students on a long-term basis. All in all, it was an amazing visit for the students.'

'It was a great pleasure to meet the students from Brighton', said John Khan.'They were full of enthusiasm with loads of questions. We look forward to developing our relationship with City College Brighton and Hove and to working with these students in the future.'
