In an outstanding year of achievement, City College Brighton and Hove recently held its City Achievers 2010 student awards ceremony in Brighton. From a cohort of around 12,000 students, the College chose forty-one winners in areas as diverse as Visual Arts, Business, Hairdressing, Horticulture, Carpentry, Sports and Catering. There were also University scholarship awards and inaugural presentations of a 'Golden Alumni' award for notable ex-students and an 'Employers Contribution' award to celebrate successful training collaborations with local businesses. 2010 has been the College's most successful year ever with an overall pass rate of 83%. For long courses for both 16-19 learners and adults it has achieved success rates of 83% and 84% respectively, placing it within the top 15% of colleges nationally. There have also been a range of regional and national accolades for City College students in the last year. Principal Phil Frier says:
'We consider City Achievers to be the highlight of the College year and hearing so many stories of success against the odds, personal transformation and sheer hard work reaffirms why vocational education is such an inspiring and rewarding sector to be involved in. I was also delighted to celebrate our links with ex-students and local employers with the new Golden Alumni and Employers Contribution awards as I think they serve to remind us that by nurturing talent and helping people achieve their potential, City College is part of the lifeblood of the community and the local economy.'

Phil Frier with City Achiever 2010 Emily Brown
The overall City Achiever 2010 is Emily Brown. Emily didn't get off to a good start at City College. Against a background of living independently from the age of 16, she had disciplinary problems and was asked to leave a Travel & Tourism course. Emily then grabbed an opportunity to join the BTEC First Diploma in Business course. She had a realisation about the importance of education and began applying herself to achieving good grades, was named 'Student of the Month' and now looks set to continue her studies at the University of Brighton. Emily has also been awarded the Spencer Bulkely Schofield bursary. Emily says:
'City Achievers was an incredible night for me and to be the overall winner was such a big honour. When they were presenting the award and talking about the guts and determination I've showed, I felt really proud but I wouldn't have been able to turn things around the way I did without all the mentoring, support and encouragement I've had from City College. My mum's support has really meant a lot to me too.'
The winner of the Golden Alumni award is Clare Rogers. Since being a Beauty Therapy student at the College from 1979 to 1981, Clare has gone on to achieve outstanding success with the biggest urban day spa and beauty salon in Brighton, The Treatment Rooms. Clare says:
'I'm very honoured to win this award both as a local business woman and local resident. I'm not an academic and have achieved success by having a very good base of knowledge from my days at City College. My time at the College covered everything from beauty treatments and cosmetic science through to flower arranging, business studies, psychology and more. I'd never have known at the time but I've used these skills throughout my career. '
American Express is the winner of the Employer Contribution Award for embracing staff training and the excellent working partnership it has developed with the College. The company provided staff with a full support programme to aid the achievement of nationally recognised qualifications which has included mentors, buddies and delivery of internal workshops to support the learners to achieve. Ivan Mainprize, Vice President of Membership Travel Services at American Express, says:
'We're delighted to receive the Employer Contribution Award. We've worked closely with the college to offer a number of our employees the chance to achieve an NVQ Level II or III in Customer Service. We believe it's important for our employees to have the opportunity for continued learning and recognition, and the course has been a great success with our employees in the Travel and Concierge teams? so much so that we've another group of employees signed up to take part.'
