City College Brighton and Hove says that its foreign language Adult Learning courses can not only be an asset on overseas holidays but can also boost job prospects. According to a recent survey by The National Centre for Languages, the UK's weakness in foreign language proficiency is severely hampering its ability to trade effectively in today's globally competitive climate. In over 20 per cent of cases, it was blamed for loss of business. The UK was also recently ranked bottom in a league table of 28 European countries in terms of language capabilities.
As the world becomes more globalised, employers are placing increasing value on candidates who can speak additional languages. These employees, who are in demand as they can communicate with clients, suppliers and colleagues abroad, find that they have many more opportunities available to them. City College currently offers Adult Learning courses ? from beginners to advanced level - in French, Spanish, Russian, Japanese and Swedish and Turkish.
Nicola Peters, a Sales Specialist working for School Travel Services, is currently studying Spanish at the College. Nicola says:

Nicola Peters and Maria Hernandez
'I work in the travel industry so any knowledge of any other languages is beneficial to my job and enhances my career prospects. My Spanish tutor Maria is very personable, evening classes suit my schedule and the course is going really well.'
Heather Shaw, City College's Adult and Community Learning Manager, says:
'It's clear that one of the most significant issues limiting career development is a lack of language skills. Our Adult Learning department is committed to supporting lifelong learning so if you're thinking you could benefit from learning a new skill, a language course is a highly advisable option.'
Language courses at City College are very competitively priced - £250 for one-year courses, £150 concessions. For more information, call 01273 667744.
