City College Brighton and Hove has announced that it will be working in partnership with Brighton & Hove City Council to deliver an Apprenticeship programme to children's nurseries in the city. The Childcare Apprenticeships will be available to nurseries in the private, voluntary and independent sector. Nationally, there is currently a shortage of childcare places and the government is encouraging people to enter childcare careers.
Cara Mitchell, Manager of the Butterfly Nursery in Hove, says

Childcare apprentices
'As an employer, we're very keen on Childcare apprenticeships because it means that we can get 'home grown' staff who are trained in our way of doing things. I've been really impressed with the commitment and enthusiasm of our new crop of apprentices and it already feels like they're an integral part of the team. They've shown loads of initiative and haven't needed the level of guidance you might expect. I've seen their confidence grow rapidly and they've settled into their role very quickly.'
Childcare Apprentice Laura Dixon adds:
'The type of learning I've had in the past when I've been sitting in a lecture hall taking notes didn't suit me at all whereas as an apprentice, its much more hands-on so I can see a direct link between the course work and the practical skills. The staff here are really helpful and supportive and you're made to feel like part of the team rather than being treated differently because you're an apprentice. It's also great that you 'earn while you learn' rather than building up debt like you can do when you go to university.'
