City College launches first 'Street Arts Performance' course

12 May 2008

City College Brighton and Hove has launched an innovative new 'Street Arts Performance' course for Performing and Visual Artists who are seeking to work in the increasingly popular field of Street Arts. It is the first course of its kind in the country and leads to a Foundation Degree qualification. The course covers all types of outdoor performances such as carnivals, street theatre, installations and spectaculars. The course will provide students with the opportunity to develop skills with artists and performers from a range of disciplines. Students will be developing their skills through working with practitioners in events such as Brighton Festival and Fringe Festival's outdoor programme in a range of different capacities. As well as the creative aspects of the work, students will also gain skills in relation to business and legal affairs and how to find and sustain employment opportunities.

Outdoor arts events are an important part of Brighton and Hove's cultural offer and one in which the city excels. In recognition of the importance of this, Brighton & Hove Arts Commission commissioned a report on outdoor arts events in the city in 2006 with a list of recommendations, one of which was that the Arts Commission should support the development of accredited training for site specific and street arts. This was in order to improve the quality and maximise the potential of the city's artistic community in making the most of the opportunities afforded by the year-round calendar of annual events and the coming of the Cultural Olympiad.

Donna Close, Brighton & Hove Arts Commission's Arts Development Manager, says:

'We are extremely pleased that City College has seized the initiative in designing a course that will help produce a new generation of artists creating high-quality work in the public realm.'

Siou Hannam, the City College tutor who devised the course, says:

"Having worked in street arts performance for twenty-five years, I got a real sense of achievement in producing a course that is designed and led by practitioners. I feel it's something that Brighton really needs. I can't wait to get the first intake of students because I think it'll be an exciting and positive experience for everyone involved."
