City College launches its own employment service

4 November 2010

City College Brighton and Hove, the largest provider of vocational education and training in the city, has announced the November launch of City Jobs, a new dedicated service that aims to match local employers with local, work-ready employees. City Business Club ? the business networking club run by the College's City Business Skills department - is hosting City Job's official launch event on the 16th November 2010 from 7.30am to 10.00am at The Gallery, City College's training restaurant on Whitecross Street, Brighton.

Based at the College's main campus on Pelham Street, City Jobs will provide employers from Brighton & Hove and beyond with a service to promote their job vacancies to thousands of current and former students from across the age spectrum. It will provide a pool of quality, pre-screened applicants who have demonstrated motivation and commitment to a specific career by completing a course directly relevant to that particular sector. City Jobs will also support both candidates and employers by arranging 'work trials' which provide an opportunity to assess candidates' suitability for the organisation/role as well as a dedicated space for employers to interview prospective candidates. Two dedicated employment officers will work to support students and other local residents to search for and apply to jobs that are advertised directly via City Jobs, the Jobcentre Plus website and brightonandhovejobs.com

Dan Shelley, City College's Head of Partnerships and Projects, says:

'We feel that City Jobs is a really exciting development for the College and hope it will become one of the main places that employers turn to when they're trying to fill their vacancies. But it'll be much more than an employment service and provide a really supportive environment for students to update their CVs, complete applications forms and practice interviews as well as making those all-important phone calls when they're job hunting. It's also very much about building links with employers so we're keen to hear from local businesses who would like to advertise part time or full time jobs, offer work placements or volunteering opportunities.'

City Jobs will also be helping to support employment in the construction sector as City College is a partner within the Council-led Local Labour Market Scheme which aims to develop a register of local people seeking employment in the construction industry and negotiates with contractors who are developing sites in the city to employ from this register. Staff from the Local Labour Market Scheme will be based at City Jobs at least one day per week. Employers interested in using this service can contact Caroline Wilcock or Katy Moore on 01273 667788 ext. 527 or email cape@ccb.ac.uk

City Business Club's launch event for City Jobs on November 16th will include a full English breakfast and the speaker for this event will be City College's Dan Shelley who will be providing a lively overview of what City Jobs has to offer local employers. It is free to belong to City Business Club, there is, however a £12 fee for attending each event. Spaces are strictly limited so book now to avoid disappointment. To book your space at the next City Business Club event or to find out more about the club please call 01273 667756 and choose option 4 or email us on cbc@ccb.ac.uk
