City College Brighton and Hove has unveiled the Brighton Marathon trophies designed for both the first Brightonian male and female past the finish line and also for the winners of the much-publicised Mayo Wynne Baxter corporate challenge. The distinctive designs for these trophies come from Cadi Froehlich and Jo Brown, students on the Fine Art Foundation Degree course.
Jo Brown's perspex design for the winners of the Mayo Wynne Baxter corporate challenge represents the marathon route along which a silver ball moves when the trophy's tilted. Jo collaborated with Matt Gray, a Level 3 Engineering student, who used his practical skills in CNC (computer numerical control) machinery to make her 2-dimensional drawing into the stunning finished piece.

'I really wanted to design a trophy that was worth running 26 miles for so I put a lot of time and effort into trying to make something special', says Jo. 'It's been really fantastic to work with someone from engineering with a skills base that is way beyond anything that I'd be capable of doing myself, with knowledge of a machine that I would have no idea how to use. The trophy's come out exactly how I wanted it to so it's been a great collaboration between art and engineering to create the object that I had in my mind.'
'It's been rewarding to make something really durable that I hope the winners will want to have on display for years', says Cadi Froehlich, who made her trophies out of brass. 'A lot of what we do on the course is about exploring and experimenting but it's really important to get hands-on experience of making something to a professional standard to a deadline which is what made this such a worthwhile creative challenge. The College's engineering department also helped out with the heavy cutting so I think they deserve a lot of credit for their contribution.'
Inspired by the success of the project, Cadi and Jo have now formed their own bespoke trophy-making company, Trophy Wives Trophies. For more details see: www.trophy-wives-trophies.com
