City College shortlisted for TES award

10 November 2011

The success of City College’s partnership with Jobcentre Plus in providing local jobseekers with the skills and training they need to get back into work has been recognised at national level by being shortlisted for the ‘Outstanding Contribution to the Local Community’ award in the Times Educational Supplement’s Further Education Awards. Out of hundreds of nominations from all over the country for providers large and small, six that stood out for their creativity, originality and passion were selected for this category. A judging panel will select the winner, which will be revealed at a ceremony on 11th November in London.

Through partnerships with both Jobcentre Plus and the brightonandhovejobs.com website, in the last year, the College has got 120 unemployed young people into employment and has also found part-time work for 100 of its 16-19 year-old students. John Hayes, Minister for Further Education, Skills & Lifelong Learning, said on a visit to the College earlier this year: ‘City College has formed that partnership and understands that in the move from disengagement to reengagement, skills are critical and the College is in a pivotal position to provide people with those skills to add to their employability. In terms of the relationship with Jobcentre Plus, they're providing a fantastic example that can be followed by others.’

‘We’re delighted to get this kind of recognition from such a highly-respected publication’, said Principal Phil Frier.

Gerard Kelly, editor of The TES, said: 'The TES FE Awards are an opportunity to recognise the dedication and expertise of staff in FE who transform the lives of learners. These nominees represent some of the best of this amazing and dynamic sector.'
