City College sponsors Cuban legends in Brighton Festival

12 March 2009

City College Brighton and Hove has announced that it is one of the sponsors of this year’s Brighton Festival in May. The Festival is England’s largest arts and cultural festival, offering a three week frenzy of theatre, comedy, cabaret, music, musicals, opera, dance, talks and exhibitions, in venues right across the UK’s most exciting seaside city.

The College’s sponsorship is focusing on one event in particular – a concert at Brighton’s Dome on May 12th by Cuba's legendary dance band Orquesta Aragón. With its sophisticated big-band format, including strings, flute, piano and percussion, Aragón was the toast of Cuba's Belle époque for three decades, shaping each new dance craze from charanga francesca to its signature cha-cha-cha. Seventy years on, Brighton will be swooning to the soaring strings and lilting melodies of this classic 16-piece Cuban dance orchestra in a rare and exclusive UK visit.

Phil Frier, Principal of City College Brighton and Hove, says:

"It’s a real coup to have Orquesta Aragón coming to Brighton and the College is honoured to be associated with such a wonderful event. I always feel that Brighton Festival perfectly encapsulates the cosmopolitan nature of the city which the College is also proud to reflect in the friendly, multicultural community we have here."
