City College Brighton and Hove has announced that it will be sponsoring TAKEPART, a new city-wide sports festival taking place in the city during June and July next year. The College's commitment to sport has been further underlined by the news that in September 2008, it will be offering the full-time courses BTEC National Award in Sport (Sports Development and Fitness) Level 3 and CYQ Fitness/Gym Instructor Level 2. City College and local comprehensive Dorothy Stringer will be sponsoring TAKEPART in 2008 with £10,000 of sponsorship each. The City Council, the NHS Teaching Primary Care Trust and the Schools Sports Partnership recently launched their plans for the Brighton & Hove International Festival of Sport at an event at Hove Town Hall. The 2008 festival will be the first of five festivals between now and the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.
Plans for the festival include:
? a spectacular TAKEPART day on June 28th 2008 in Preston Park with free taster sessions from over 30 different activities and sports, special displays and performances, team games for all the family and a special market area with information about clubs and associations in the city
? a two-week programme for schools offering over 80 different activities at every school in the city
?an outdoor weekend with activities along the seafront from Hove Lagoon to Brighton Marina
? a series of tournaments and competitions involving teams from all over Brighton & Hove in the biggest celebration of sport the city has ever seen.
Phil Frier, Principal at City College says:
'Initiatives like this are fantastic for the city and for everyone living here. City College is proud to be an Official Sponsor of the festival and looks forward to really taking part next year.'
Trevor Allen, Head Teacher at Dorothy Stringer who head up the local Schools Sports Partnership says:
'This festival is about recapturing the fun of sport and physical activity. Whatever you like doing whether it be a formal sport like swimming or volleyball or a game of rounders in the park with some friends, we want you to come and take part.'
Alan McCarthy, Chief Executive of the City Council says:
'Involvement in sport and physical activity is hugely important for the health and well being of the city. The festival's ambitions for community involvement and participation - by 2012 we hope to involve over 50,000 people each year ? are fantastic and will make a huge difference.'
Funding was announced from a number of sources including the three main partners, the City Council, the NHS Teaching Primary Care Trust and the Schools Sports Partnership. Support was also given by the Youth Sports Trust and by Sport England.
