City College strengthens educational links with Jeddah

7 March 2008

Eleven members of the senior management team from Jeddah College of Technology in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have attended an apprenticeship training workshop at City College Brighton and Hove. As well as being part of the process of building a strong working relationship between the two Colleges, the visit was designed to assist the Jeddah staff in developing and introducing apprenticeship training to their institution as no such programme is currently provided in Saudi Arabia.

As part of City College's British Council-sponsored twinning agreement with Jeddah College, a group of eight City College students took part in an exchange visit to Jeddah in December last year. This was the first student visit by an overseas college to Saudi Arabia and attracted considerable media attention across the Kingdom.

Phil Frier, Principal of City College, says:

'The bond that's growing between City College and Jeddah College is proving to be rewarding on both an educational and a cultural level. Our students and staff were deeply impressed by the warmth and hospitality they received when they visited Saudi Arabia in December and I hope we've gone some way to repaying that kindness while Dr. Mansour Almiman and his team have been with us in Brighton.'

Dr. Mansour Almiman, Principal of Jeddah College, says:

'We're deeply grateful to City College for organising these technical seminars on the introduction of apprenticeship training into Jeddah College. We hope this visit will open the door for more events and cooperation and bring more success for both Colleges. The model of the British apprenticeship is a good one and we hope to implement it in our College in the near future.'
