City College student scoops YCN Award

19 October 2010

James Cox, a Digital Media Design student at City College Brighton and Hove, has won a coveted 'A' award in the annual YCN (Young Creative Network) Student Awards in London. Supported by Universities, Colleges and Art & Design Schools across the UK, the awards were established in 2001 to inspire and showcase emerging creative talent. The awards enable partnering organisations such as Google, The 02, Hovis and the global anti-poverty agency ActionAid to engage with the very best emerging creative practitioners in design and advertising by setting them a live creative brief. James (28) and the other commended entrants' work will now be celebrated online and in print, and showcased as part of an industry exhibition.

The brief given to students by B******s to Poverty (ActionAid's Youth Network) was to suggest how to inspire young people to give £5 a month to ActionAid's work. James came up with the concept of 'Just Stay In' which encouraged young people to pick an evening on which they would normally go out and send the money they'd saved to ActionAid. This involved signing up to an email subscription incentivised by promotional perks such as 2 for 1 pizza and DVD rental deals. James designed a Just Stay In logo, mock website and mock subscription page which ActionAid's Youth engagement Officer Helen Hector was highly impressed by. Helen says:

'We were amazed by the high standard of submissions for our brief and the quality of original design ideas. We loved James' entry because he captured the DIY creative feel of B******s to Poverty with his Just Stay In idea. By giving people something fun to do in return for their hard-earned cash, it means supporting ActionAid can easily fit into young people's demanding lives.'

James says:

'It was brilliant to get this kind of recognition in my first year of doing Digital Media Design at City College. Working on concept development and getting feedback from tutors and other students has really helped me get to the level where I could achieve something like this. '
