Cadi Froehlich, a mature student and mother of two studying on a Fine Art Foundation Degree at City College Brighton and Hove, has been named as one of the winners of the prestigious Jerwood Drawing Prize. Cadi (37) has already established herself as one of City College's most gifted artists having been named as Fine Art Achiever of the Year in 2009 and also being commissioned to design trophies for the Brighton Marathon which were sponsored by the College. As runner-up, Cadi was awarded a cheque for £3,000. Cadi's award-winning work, Untitled (tea table), comprises of a side table with marks left by hot drinks. She explains:
'Untitled (tea table) has evolved from a process of work looking at what was, what isn't and what could be. Mindful of the passing of time and the potential of the future, this period of work has questioned the reality of the now. Evoking moments spent, lost or yearned for, the table bears the marks that illustrate meetings, conversations and quiet contemplations spent over a cup of tea. The format of the drinking and the style of cup changes, as does the purpose, aim or hope in the moment of the drinking.'

Of the award, Cadi says:
'It was brilliant to get this sort of recognition. It was a lesson in getting your work out there and I was just totally blown away that they liked what I'd made. My tutors have encouraged me and given me the confidence to submit my work for competitions and I've had the experience through City College to exhibit my work so it's seen by a wider audience which prepares you really well for your career after College.'
Cadi's tutor, Chris Hill, the Curriculum Team Leader of Higher Education Arts Courses at City College, says:
'We think it's really important for students to get their work out there among other professionals and Cadi's really proved herself at a high level. She's very committed and driven about her work but also approaches it with a lot of humour and enthusiasm.'
