City College students have designs on anti-fur competition

29 April 2008

National Diploma Art & Design students at City College have been using their creative skills to come up with ideas for the ‘Design Against Fur’ competition, organised by the anti-fur trade charity Respect for Animals. The competition, which has expanded every year since its launch in 2001, is open to design students from the fields of fashion, design, fine arts, advertising, marketing, graphic design and multi-media. Hundreds of students from across the UK and Ireland are submitting designs to convey the message that the wearing of fur is cruel and unnecessary.

Each year, the City College students are required to participate in a ‘live’ project to give them an insight into the demands of the professional design world. It was decided that this year’s project should not only be highly challenging but also have an ethical design edge to it. The students’ designs were judged by a panel that included Andrew Audsley, the Assistant Creative Director at award-winning design company Ziggurat Brands and the best four were selected to go forward as the official City College entries. Andrew says:

"What impressed me was what they managed to achieve in a limited time. They really got engaged with the brief and came up with some striking ideas which were even more impressive considering the fact that these are pre-University level students."

The students’ tutor, Dan McCabe, says:

"The Design Against Fur poster campaign brief was exactly the design challenge the students needed. They responded fantastically well to this project and the four chosen students have produced concepts that will stand up well against entries from famous institutions such as St Martins and Falmouth. Even though there will be tough competition, we feel that the National Diploma students are in with a great chance of recognition, and who knows, maybe even winning."
