Thirteen catering students from City College Brighton and Hove recently spent a day at the glamorous Hampshire home of celebrity chef James Martin. The students had the opportunity to cook under James' supervision as well as getting career advice, a tour of his home and grounds and a close look at his extensive collection of top-of-the-range cars and motorcycles! At the end of the visit, each of the students got a signed copy of James' latest book. The visit was organised through Alliance & Leicester's 'Mentor Days' promotion to publicise their Premier 21 account amongst 16-21 year-olds. Through his appearances on Ready, Steady, Cook starting in 1996 and the publication of his first book Eating in with James Martin in 1998, James has become one of Britain's best-loved celebrity chefs. Since then, he has rarely been off-screen, most recently charming viewers by making it to the semi-final of Strictly Come Dancing and taking over in 2006 as presenter of BBC1's popular Saturday Kitchen.
Student Claire Edwards says:

James Martin with City College student Claire Edwards
'James was a really nice guy and very laid-back about having us all at his home. I enjoyed the cooking part but the most interesting thing for me was seeing how he grew all his own veg and he showed us how to plant and maintain a vegetable plot properly. Hearing about how he made it in the business was really inspiring. It was an amazing day.'
Student Ryan Walshe says:
'James told us that the best way to get on in the catering business is to keep your eyes open and your mouth shut which gave us something to think about! I enjoyed everything about the day, especially getting the chance to climb into one of James' racing cars.'
Andy McGlennon, Chef/Lecturer at City College, says:
'James was very candid, honest and down-to-earth. He was superb with the students and very approachable. The students loved it?they had a brilliant day and it influenced them to be more motivated and grab opportunities the way that James has.'
