A group of Foundation Learning Life Skills students at City College Brighton and Hove who have been the stars of a hit 'docusoap' show broadcast on the internet, have been named as winners of both the Webby Award and the People's Voice Award for the best reality show. Hailed as the 'internet's highest honour' by the New York Times, the Webby Awards is the leading international award honouring excellence on the web. City College students Sam, Hilly, Megan, Lewis and their friend Lucy, all of whom have an intellectual disability (Down's Syndrome and Williams Syndrome), flew over to New York to attend the Awards Ceremony which was held on June 14th. International celebrities such as Buzz Aldrin, Lisa Kudrow and Isabella Rosselini were also accepting awards on the night.
Its big news for this little show which was made against the odds after TV commissioners in the UK turned it down. Made with no funding and edited in the producers' spare bedroom, the series has gone on to be a hit on the web, with the ups and downs of these five lifelong friends capturing people's hearts all over the world.
