City College Brighton and Hove recently hosted the WorldSkills Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) Engineering Milling and Turning heats which offered students and trainees the opportunity to benchmark their abilities against their peers and hone their skills. Competitors will go on to compete live to become WorldSkills UK national gold medal winners for CNC Milling and Turning. The WorldSkills Competition is the largest skills event in the world, where young people from 51 countries meet and compete in over 40 different skills, ranging from cabinet making to web design. The ultimate prizes are gold, silver and bronze medals.
The recent CNC Machining Competition was organised by Engineering Prospects, the Sussex Engineering Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE). The CoVE is designed to support those in work seeking career progression, new entrants to the labour market and those seeking employment by offering the very highest standards of teaching and facilities, with a diverse range of training and skills development, typically including a range of recognised qualifications as well as specialist, tailored courses. Graham Peters, CoVE Manager of Engineering Prospects, says:

Student Philip Stowart at WorldSkills heats hosted at City College East
'These regional competitions have given the South East a chance to showcase real talent in the field of CNC Machining. This is an opportunity for our highly skilled young engineers to demonstrate their skills and be recognised for their achievements. It has also been a very positive example of how industry and the college can work together for the benefit of all.'
National Gold, Silver and Bronze WorldSkills UK Competition winners will be recognised at the WorldSkills UK Competition Award Ceremony later in the year.
