Colin Jackson Celebrates City College Students' Excellence

13 December 2005

Students from City College Brighton and Hove have been formally recognised for excellence in vocational skills at the UK Skills Competition Awards Ceremony, supported by City & Guilds. The annual event, which recently took place at The Royal Geographical Society in London, celebrates vocational skills excellence.

Beauty Therapy Student Veronica Jimenez-Ortega was a Gold Medal Winner, whilst Art Students Yeganeh Danesteh-Pour and Lucy Rodriguez won Silver and 'Highly Commended' awards respectively. Colin Jackson, the 110 metres hurdles World Record Holder, presented the winning competitors with their trophies and Phil Hope Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Skills congratulated the students on their achievements.

Colin says:

'Veronica, Yeganeh and Lucy have displayed a high level of commitment to their skill area and the motivation, dedication and energy needed to achieve their goal. From my experience, I have found that taking part in competitions is extremely satisfying and that the hard work invested is rewarded by a boost to morale and self esteem. Competitions are also an excellent way to hone your skills by competing against your peers.'

Veronica says:

'I was delighted to win the award and Colin Jackson was really friendly and interested in what we did. It was a great event to be involved in.'

Phil Hope, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Skills, says:

'It is a privilege to be here today to congratulate so many of you on your outstanding achievements. For too long the UK has undervalued vocational skills and training; I am delighted to see them being rightly celebrated here today with a group of such highly skilled individuals. Skills competitions raise standards in vocational education by encouraging students to strive for excellence, they also encourage individuals' personal development, including self confidence, communication skills and motivation.'
