College hails local marathon runners with bespoke trophies

16 May 2011

City College Brighton and Hove recently held a special presentation for Robbie James and Cathy Ulliott - the first Brightonian male and female past the finish line in this year's Brighton Marathon. The College had provided bespoke trophies for the event designed by Fine Art Foundation Degree student Cadi Froehlich, who made her trophies out of brass and re-claimed wood from the West Pier. 'The College prides itself on being at the heart of the local community so we felt it was important to get involved with the marathon from day one', said Principal Phil Frier. 'I think Cadi's design is stunning and providing these trophies was an ideal way for us to show our support for the event and celebrate Robbie and Cathy's success.'

'I was really delighted and surprised to win this award for the second year running', said Cathy Ulliott. 'I think the whole concept is brilliant because it links the marathon with the city and also it encourages local runners to participate because even if they'll probably never win the marathon overall, they can win this trophy which is exciting and motivating.'

'Cadi's design for the Brightonian trophies is fantastic', said Race Director Tim Hutchins. 'City College did the trophies for us in Year 1 and they were innovative and different then. This year couldn't be any more different and I think it was an inspired idea to use wood from the old pier which is a super piece of Brighton heritage. The event was very well supported by Brightonians so to be able to award a trophy made by City College from the heart of the city to the best local man and woman is a delight.'

'It's been rewarding to make something really durable that I hope the winners will want to have on display for years', added Cadi Froehlich. 'A lot of what we do on the course is about exploring and experimenting but it's really important to get hands-on experience of making something to a professional standard to a deadline which is what made this such a worthwhile creative challenge.'

City College is currently recruiting for the Fine Art Foundation Degree course starting in September 2011. For more details see www.ccb.ac.uk or contact course information on 01273 667759.
