College pledges commitment to adult learning despite cuts

12 September 2011

City College Brighton and Hove, recently praised as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, has pledged its commitment to adult learning despite adult learning budgets being slashed by 25% by the coalition government and colleges being instructed to decrease the level of their subsidy to 50% as the government believes learners, or their employers, should pay more of the costs of their courses.

'It’s a really challenging time for Colleges across the country when it comes to providing adult learning', says Heather Shaw. 'However, as Brighton & Hove’s community college, opportunities for lifelong learning must remain a fundamental part of what we offer so we’re continuing to provide hundreds of weekday, evening and weekend courses both at the College and at local community venues. It’s important that we’re still offering as much variety as possible so our courses still include the arty and creative side of learning alongside languages and practical courses in areas such as cookery or computing. Enrolling on a community learning or adult part-time course isn’t just a great way to learn a new skill or gain a qualification but is also a confidence booster, providing the opportunity to meet new people and improve health and wellbeing.'

To be eligible, applicants will have to sign a self declaration form at their enrolment session that states they are currently unemployed, in receipt of a state benefit, want to enter employment and need additional skills to do so.
