Construction employers urged to take on apprentices

8 July 2009

City College Brighton and Hove has launched a new drive to convince employers in the construction industry to take on apprentices. Times are tough in the industry with a recent report from business recovery and restructuring specialists Begbies Traynor showing that the number of construction firms suffering financial problems has increased by 126% in the first three months of this year compared with the first quarter of 2008. At the same time, however, a recent survey by the Learning and Skills Council showed that 81 per cent of employers thought that apprentices helped to generate higher overall productivity. In light of this, City College is stressing that at times when construction firms need to keep their staffing costs down, taking on an apprentice makes good business sense.

Donna Keenan, City College's Employer Partnership Manager, says:

'Apprentices are vital to the construction industry and they can be a real asset to any company. We realise that some firms are concerned that taking on an apprentice will turn out to be too costly or time consuming but that's simply not the case. It's crucial that firms continue to invest in staff training in order to be in a stronger business position when the industry inevitably comes out of this downturn.'
