Cultural apprentices celebrate at Royal Pavilion

4 April 2011

Two young apprentices who gained a Level 2 National Award in Cultural and Heritage Venue Operations through City College Brighton and Hove's City Business Skills department recently had their achievement celebrated in a presentation at Brighton's Royal Pavilion.

Cassie Harrison and Zak Flannery were taken on as apprentices by Brighton Royal Pavilion and Museums in November 2009 and have experienced a variety of work, from staging exhibitions and events to helping to look after historic buildings. The qualification Cassie and Zak achieved with City College covers front-of-house, administrative or support roles within any type of cultural venue and incorporated hands-on experience of the processes and procedures that enable a cultural venue to run smoothly. City College's Skills Adviser Marcus Pescod says:

'Cassie and Zak both showed great determination and worked exceptionally hard to achieve the knowledge and research required to cover the Award, technical certificates and key skills. They gained a broad, up-to-date knowledge of the creative and cultural sector and this qualification will really help further their career within the industry.'
John Cooper, the Royal Pavilion's Volunteer and Training Manager, says:

'The relationship with City College was crucial. We couldn't have gone ahead with these apprenticeships without learning support from an accredited organisation and the College fulfilled that role to a really high standard.'

Cassie Harrison says:

'City College has been really supportive the whole way through this apprenticeship and our Skills Adviser was always there for us if we needed any help. It's been such a privilege to work at the Royal Pavilion with such a great team of people. I've had a wonderful time and learnt so much.'
