Cup glory for City College

6 May 2010

City College First XI Football Team has won the Sussex Schools and Colleges Under 19 Cup with a 1 ? 0 victory over Steyning Grammar.

Both teams found it hard to pass the ball on a poor surface but City College dominated the early exchanges and missed several good chances, before breaking the deadlock on 20 minutes. After a free kick was awarded for a foul on the edge of the box, Fred Foreman stepped up and curled the free kick into the top corner from 20 yards. This was a goal worthy of winning any final, and took the midfielder's tally to 20 for the season. After the match, City College Head Coach, and ex-Albion midfielder Richard Carpenter said:

'I'm pleased the boys have won some silverware to show for their hard work this season, but we've a big game next week so we have to make sure we focus and win that game which will see us crowned national league champions.'

City College Second XI had also won some silverware on the previous evening by defeating Chichester High 2 ? 1 in the Sussex Schools and Colleges Under 19 First XI League Play-Off final. Despite going 1 ? 0 down midway through the second half, the team showed great spirit to fight back and won the game thanks to two goals from Dale Hurley.

If the First XI can win their league decider next Wednesday, it will cap a remarkable first season for the City College Football Development Academy, and see them win a National League, County League and County Cup treble.
