Dream Exhibition for Emilia

12 November 2007

Emilia McKenzie (23), a Multimedia student at City College Brighton and Hove, has been selected as one of the artists to have their work shown at 'Pause', a fascinating new exhibition at Brighton's Phoenix Gallery. Phoenix is the largest artist-led arts organisation in the South East of England.

In Pause, artists working with the moving image explore the medium of film and video to create a series of specially made installations. Themes of the work range from nursery rhymes to unsolved mysteries to rediscovered footage and shifting still-lives. The images flicker within cabinets and across objects and walls. Meanwhile, a rolling programme of short films invites the visitor to pause and linger within a cinema space. Emilia's exhibit, 'Tape Your Eyelids Open', was inspired by a friend who had a dream in which she had to overcome a series of challenges and solve complex riddles in order to escape from the dream. Emilia says:

'I did a module on film and video at College during which we were encouraged to explore our own ideas. From an initial idea I'd drawn as a comic strip, I was able to make it come alive in this film through learning the technical skills with cameras and image manipulation software on the course. It's very exciting to be part of this exhibition; it's been a very positive experience and made me feel more confident about getting my work out there.'

Karin Mori, Phoenix's Gallery & Education Manager, says:

'Emilia's film really impressed us and was ideal for the exhibition because the theme and content fitted in perfectly with the other artists. Although she's the youngest exhibitor in the show, her work shows a real maturity and a striking visual style.'

Pause will be on display at the Phoenix Gallery, 10 - 14 Waterloo Place, Brighton, until 1st December. For more information call 01273 603700.
