Drug Issue Explored at Art Show

20 June 2006

The end of year show at City College Brighton and Hove celebrates the creative achievements of students completing their courses in Art, Design and Media at all levels. This year, one of the most striking exhibits looks at the controversial issue of drugs.

'Surrealism' by Tara Thornton features textiles and photography. It was influenced by Salvador Dali's work in the 1930's and the psychedelic scene of the 1960's. Tara says:

'I looked at the psychedelic patterns of clothes from that period and the influence of hallucinogenic drugs and also how Lewis Carroll was influenced by taking opium when he wrote 'Alice in Wonderland'. I'm interested in how things aren't what they seem on the surface and my photographs are an interpretation of how drugs are made to resemble sweets such as lovehearts. They're nice and sweet and innocent to look at but what lies underneath is not so nice.'

Tara's tutor Judy Dwyer says:

'Tara's got a great sense of decoration in her work with lots of excellent embroidery and she's spent a lot of time using different media. It's a very thoughtful piece dealing with an issue that's very pertinent to Brighton. A lot of the students have been inspired by social issues and across the board there's a breadth of work including textiles, 3-dimensional design, ceramics, glass, photography, video, traditional drawing, painting, printmaking, fashion?. there's pretty much something for everybody.'

There is a private view of the end of year show for invited guests only on Friday 23rd June. The exhibition opens to the public on Monday 26th June and Tues 27th June from 10.00 am to 1.00pm, 2.00pm to 5.00pm and 6.00pm to 8.00 pm. On Wednesday 28th June, opening times are 10.00am to 1.00pm.
