Embroidery student awarded for technical excellence

14 December 2009

Mary Shrewsbury, an advanced embroidery student at City College Brighton and Hove's Connaught Adult Learning Centre, has won a prestigious Technical Excellence award. Mary was one of twenty finalists who'd been challenged to produce stitched textile pieces which were recently on show as part of the 'Freedom' exhibition at the Forge Mill Needle Museum in Worcestershire. The awards, organised by the Charles Henry Foyle Trust and Redditch Borough Council, aim to promote the work of new and promising textile artists. Mary based her winning piece around Jean Rousseau's quote 'Man is born free but everywhere he is in chains'. She called the piece 'Freedom From, Freedom To' and describes it as representing the positive and negative interpretation of freedom.

The finalists were selected by the internationally-acclaimed textile artist, Alice Kettle, who says:

'Mary combined an intensely moving composition with a refined making. The work never fell into any stitch clichés - it showed how the substance of material, the expressive use of stitch can affirm and enrich its presence and message. It was unstated yet bold, disturbing but beautiful, enigmatic and yet potently powerful. '

Praising her City College tutor, Wendy Dolan, Mary says:

'Wendy's technical knowledge and skilful teaching ensures that your ideas can be fully realized however difficult and this helped me to confidently tackle the 'Freedom' competition project. I was really pleased with my competition entry and it wouldn't have mattered if I hadn't won anything but gaining acknowledgment and future support from Alice Kettle has really spurred me on to develop the figurative theme in textiles. I feel this is just the beginning.'
