Ex-City College student scoops Gold at Hampton Court

15 July 2008

Paul Thomas, who studied Horticulture at City College Brighton and Hove and who now runs the House of Plants, a uniquely specialist indoor plant nursery in Mayfield, Sussex, has scooped a Gold Medal in the Hampton Court Flower Show for his garden 'The Outside World of the Indoor Plant'. Hampton Court is the world's biggest annual gardening event, attracting more than 180,000 visitors each year. The show marks the middle of the gardening year when summer is in full swing and a completely different range of plants have come into flower since the springtime RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Paul's garden won praise from judges for the way in which it displayed exciting new plants in island beds according to their country of origin.

Paul's former tutor Jim Miller says:

'Paul always had a great love of plants and a flair for design. We knew he would go far in his chosen field and to achieve Gold at Hampton Court so soon after setting up his unique nursery is a fantastic achievement.'

Paul (38), from Ringmer, says:

'I'm absolutely thrilled to have won Gold at Hampton Court especially considering the extremely high calibre of the other gardens. Jim Miller was a really attentive and enthusiastic mentor when I was at City College and the knowledge I gained there was crucial when I was conceiving the medal-winning garden.'
