Brighton’s legendary DJ and dance music pioneer Fatboy Slim connected with his local heartland again when he visited students from City College Brighton and Hove at the College’s Central Campus in Pelham Street.
Fatboy, AKA Norman Cook, hosted an exclusive ‘Ask Norman’ session which covered a range of topics such as music production, internet piracy, the changing economics of the music business, the forthcoming Amex stadium gig and, of course, his beloved Brighton & Hove Albion! The visit was to help promote the Big Beach Boutique 5 which will unite two of Brighton’s best loved institutions when Fatboy takes to the decks at Brighton and Hove Albion’s state-of-the-art American Express Community Stadium on Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd of June. After the City College event, Norman went on to appear on student radio station BURST to field questions from students at the University of Brighton.

'Because a lot of the students at the City College event were studying music production and technology I was worried that they’d think I was a bit of an old granddad who was behind the times but we got into some really interesting discussions about sampling and re-creating samples', said Norman. 'That’s something that’s very relevant to the modern music industry and can provide income for the new generation of DJs and producers and also give them insights into how dance music production has evolved over the decades.' Norman offered to return and give Music Production students tips on his trademark sampling techniques.
Through his links with the events, marketing and advertising consultancy 360 Student Services Ltd, Hospitality & Events Management student Tom Brian had been pivotal in bringing Fatboy to the College while Music Technology student Dan Doyle, AKA DJ Care3Beatz, displayed his DJ-ing skills during the event.
'Aside from the excitement of meeting a legend like Fatboy Slim, it was an invaluable experience to be part of this event because it’s given me the opportunity to put what I’m learning on my course into practice, said Tom. 'It meant a great deal to me to meet Norman because he’s such a top DJ and he’s travelled the world and done everything that I’d like to do', said Dan. 'It was a bit daunting to be DJ-ing in front of him but it went well and I enjoyed meeting him. He seems like a really great guy and had some good pearls of wisdom for the students and I think they learnt a great deal today.'
At the June stadium gigs, Fatboy will dominate a weekend showcasing the finest in electronic dance music. On Friday, Carl Cox will take to the stage alongside Fatboy and on Saturday, Dubstep heroes Nero will bring the weekender to a bass heavy ending. Both dates have the full line-up of acts yet to be announced, which promise to provide more quality dance talent. Each day will see over 7 hours of dance entertainment culminating in a scorching starlit set by the multi-award winning, platinum album selling dance institution that is Fatboy Slim. To celebrate these events, Norman has released a limited number of tickets for City College students at just £32 for each event and no booking fee charge. These are available from the College’s Art Shop at the Pelham Street campus and the Tuck Shop at the City College East campus on Wilson Avenue.
